Let’s start with our On Page SEO check

1. Keyword at the beginning of the title tag.

If you use the keyword at the beginning of the title tag, you will help the search engine to index your website quickly. This practice is one of the most important ranking factors in on-page SEO.

Why?

Because it allows the search engine to grasp the subject of your text in a split of second.

Isn’t the search engine title the perfect title for your readers?

You can easily adapt the title, for example, with the Yoast SEO plugin :

In any case, it is important that all title elements on your page contain the keyword.

If you don’t know which keyword to use, you should do a keyword analysis . We explain how you can get the right keywords and which SEO tools can help you with this.

Keyword at the beginning of the title tag.

2. Page title in H1 tags

The page title in H1 tags ensures that Google properly perceives the heading of your page. Because Google looks primarily at the text in the HTML on your page.

A page heading, for example as an image, is overlooked by the search engine in 95% of cases.

And that shouldn’t happen at all.

A website that uses WordPress or brainbox , for example , does this automatically.

With brainbox you can easily edit the page title and the URL.
If you are using a different platform, you will have to set this manually.

3. Keyword in the URL

Keyword in the URL: Make sure that you use the keyword of your text in the URL.
Make sure that you use the keyword of your text in the URL.
We have known since 2015 that the keyword in the URL is an important signal for the search engine.

Even if it’s just a small factor, it is now good form to include the keyword in the URL.

Because: A well-built URL provides people and search engines with easy-to-understand information about the content and topic of the target page.

Therefore, from now on you should always include your keyword in the URL of your pages.

It’s even very easy with WordPress: With WordPress you can easily customize your permalink from settings.

4. The length of the URL

The length of the URL: Make sure that the URLs of your website are not too long (this is called “speaking URLs”).  The shorter and more readable the URL of your page, the better it is for people and search engines.

The example below :

Keyword in the URL

Why? For two reasons:

  • The purpose and content of the page are immediately clear
  • The search engine needs fewer resources to understand your page structure

Another benefit is that people can remember a shorter URL more easily. You can easily remember the URL in the picture below. Another advantage: Short URLs are easier to remember.

5. Keyword in the meta description

Keyword in the meta description: Be sure to write the keyword in the meta description so that people who google you will know what it is about immediately. In any case, write the keyword in the meta description so that people who Google you know immediately what it is about.

Google pays very close attention to the meta description of your website. Therefore, the meta description is a ranking factor that you should not ignore. Google pays attention to whether the core topic appears in the meta description.

Optimize your meta description:

  • To give your readers an overview of what to expect
  • Immediately place the topic (keyword) clearly visible

Not only does this help with your rankings, but it also gets your readers to click right on your page.

6. Clearly structured content

  • Clearly structured content: Structure your page so that your readers can find everything important quickly and easily. Structure your page so that your readers can find everything important quickly and easily.
  • A good user experience (UX) must be an essential focus on your website in 2021:
This means that all content is structured as simply and logically as possible.
  • Your readers need to get direct answers to their questions and be able to navigate easily from one page to the other.

Elements that can significantly influence the user experience are:

  • Easy to distinguish titles and sub-headings
  • Immediately comprehensible images and graphics
  • Short, easy-to-grasp paragraphs in the running text
  • Lists and info boxes

Your goal should be that readers can grasp your content quickly and easily.
Help the site visitors to get to the desired destination quickly and easily.

On the picture you can see how I structure my articles clearly:

  • A large cover picture that fits the topic
  • The page heading (of course in an H1 tag)
  • Short, clear paragraphs
  • Easily recognizable sub-headings (in an H2 tag)
  • And as a little extra a table of contents for longer textsa
  • And all with enough white space to easily capture the information

The Google Search Console offers you helpful tips on how to improve the usability of your pages.

7. Unique content

Unique content: Copying isn’t just stupid in school: Write something new that really helps your readers.
Copying isn’t just stupid in school: Write something new that really helps your readers.
What do teachers and search engines have in common? They don’t like it when you copy.

Therefore, Google is working hard to ensure that only unique content achieves good rankings . This also means that copied items will never appear on page one.

In search engine optimization, copied content is referred to as duplicate content .

This duplicated content isn’t just a borrowed article from another blog , though .

With duplicate content you can make your life unnecessarily difficult on your own: For example, if several of your pages deal with the same topic with the same text, then your website eats up the good rankings itself.

But that’s not all: Your content doesn’t just have to be unique, it has to offer your readers added value:

This checklist not only teaches you which 25 factors to look out for in your SEO campaign in 2021 , but also offers practical examples and infographics to download.

That’s why always try to create added value for your readers: Otherwise you can also read about it from your competitors.

8. Better content-reading level

Appropriate content-reading level: Write in a way that your target audience will understand. Instructions should be simple, a technical article can be complicated.
Write in a way that your target audience will understand. Instructions should be simple, a technical article can be complicated.
Just a few years ago, Google sorted the content-reading lives of indexed articles according to three simple criteria:

  • Easy
  • medium
  • Hard

This is no longer the case today, but we can still make use of this classification today. In most cases, you want to keep your content as simple as possible. This is how you can easily reach most people. If you are writing for a professional audience, of course, you should adapt your language to your readers:

  • A scientific publication should already be formulated in a sufficiently complex manner
  • A blog article should be written as simply as possible

To get a feel for how difficult your articles are, you can use the Yoast SEO plugin, for example.

It also gives you other helpful hints on how to best design your text.

There are great tools that give you real-time feedback.
The content reading level is not a direct ranking factor, but has a lot to do with the user experience and the bounce rate on your website:

  • Simple texts appeal to more readers
  • Understandably formulated answers will help your readers directly
  • The length of stay increases
  • So fewer visitors jump off your website

9. The keyword in the first 100 words

The keyword in the first 100 words: Get to the point quickly: Mention the topic of your article in the first 100 words of the text.

Get to the point quickly: mention the subject of your article in the first hundred words of the text.
The sooner the keyword appears in your article, the better it is for people and the search engine.

Your readers will appreciate it when you get to the point right away.

The search engine can classify and index your site much faster.

Many experienced bloggers and authors also like to forget to get to the point quickly.

You only come to the core topic of the text at the end of the introduction (or much later).

Therefore, always make sure that the topic is immediately clear – preferably in the first 50 to 100 words of your article, of course.

10. Sub-headings in H2 tags

Sub-headings in H2 tags: Give your readers a quick overview by putting sub-headings in tags.
Give your readers a quick overview by packing sub-headings in tags.
Neatly formatted sub-headings in H2 tags give you two important advantages:

  • Your readers get a good overview of the topics in your text. You can skim it with no problem and find the answer to your question.
  • This makes it much easier for search engine crawlers to understand what your site is about. The better Google understands the structure of your site, the better for your rankings.

This is how I structure my articles: An H1 heading and an H2 heading for each subtopic
You can only count on really good rankings if your content works optimally for readers AND search engines.

Below is a comparison of two pages: the first with proper formatting, the second without. Which page do you see at a glance what it is about?

11. LSI keywords in the page content

LSI keywords in the page content: LSI keywords are – simply put – related concepts that make your article more relevant.
LSI keywords are – simply put – related concepts that make your article more relevant.
LSI keywords are an advanced concept in search engine optimization.

These additional keywords give your content additional context.

They do this by adding related topics and concepts to your text .

If you use LSI keywords in your texts, you have two specific advantages:

  • By addressing related concepts, your text gets additional depth of content.
  • LSI Keywords can help you generate traffic from related searches.

Imagine you want to create a helpful SEO checklist :

Of course, it helps to address related concepts in order to draw as complete a picture of the situation as possible.

During my research, I came across the following LSI keywords, among others:

  • Package of measures
  • Seo concept
  • WordPress plugin
  • URLs
  • Text length

Not all of these related keywords make sense, but you will find some in this article.

For example, to get started you can use the free LSIGRaph. This allows you to do up to three free searches for related topics. https://lsigraph.com/ is a free tool for beginners.

LSI keywords in the page content

12. Synonyms in the running text

Synonyms in the running text: Variety is the icing on the cake: Use synonyms to make your text easy to read.
Variety is the icing on the cake: Use synonyms to make your text easy to read.
What would you say if I said you can rank for keywords that you don’t even use ? Impossible?

Thanks to Google’s semantic search , that’s very possible.

You then rank for synonyms of the keywords you use.

What is a synonym?

Synonym means: with another word or a series of words with the same or similar meaning, so that both are interchangeable in a certain context.

[ You can find out more about synonyms here ]

This can often happen with closely related topics or when there are multiple expressions of a concept.

For example the word meatball : there is a whole list of words with the same meaning in the Google index.

Meatball
minced loaf
Meat label
Meat patties
Meat loaf
Griddle
Meat fritters
Carbonate

So if you optimize your content with synonyms, you can easily rank for a multitude of related keywords – so of course you will also get more traffic to your website.

13. Arrangement of keywords

Keyword arrangement: Use different keyword arrangements in the body of your page. In this way you cover a wider range of search queries.
Use different keyword arrangements in the body of your page. In this way you cover a wider range of search queries.
The arrangement of the keywords in the search query and on your website influences the rankings for your content.

This is because the search terms are not always entered in a fixed order – even though the intention behind the search is the same (we call something like this the search intent ).

What is the search intent ?

As intent Search what people referred to in the SEOs, hope for a search.

It is therefore important that you try to map the various search intentions with your content.

For example:

In December 2019, the book The Gift by Sebastian Fitzek is often sought.

Why? Because it is number 1 on the Spiegel bestseller list in the field of fiction (entertainment literature).

If only four different people are looking for the book, then these four variations of search queries can come up:

  • sebastian fitzek book gift
  • the present sebastian fitzek
  • fitzek book gift
  • sebastian fitzek the present

And that although all four search queries have the same goal.

If your website is in a highly competitive industry, the way your keywords are placed can have a noticeable effect on your position in Google search.

Therefore you should – if possible – vary the order of your keywords in your text. This way you make sure that you don’t miss any search queries.

14. Use external links

Use external links: Use links to e.g. Wikipedia or other trustworthy websites in your text.
Use links to e.g. Wikipedia or other trustworthy websites in your text.
Outbound links help the search engine determine how relevant your text is.

Quotes, references and links to interesting sites increase the authority of your content. This is how you (technically) show the added value of your text.

But outgoing links are also helpful for your readers: Show your sources or link further articles on topics that you have only touched on.

Your best bet is to use links to trusted sites in your industry.

Remember: Always give outgoing links the attribute target = _blank , so a new tab opens and your readers don’t have to laboriously navigate back.

You can also add different attributes to your outbound links to give them more context. These attrits are:

  • rel = “nofollow“: Use this attribute if you do not want to link the linked page with your own or if the Google crawler should not follow this link.
  • rel = “sponsored” : Identifies links on your site that are part of an advertising campaign and refer to paid content.
  • rel = “ugc” : Identifies links that refer to user generated content , for example within a forum or a comment column .
You can learn more about these link attributes and how Google handles them in the Webmaster Guidelines.

external links

15. Use internal links

Use internal links: Include content from your own website that might interest your readers in your text.
Include content from your own website that might interest your readers in your text.
The strategic use of internal links is one of the most neglected SEO strategies, but it is also one of the most important.

An internal link connects two sub-pages of your website – you probably know that from the navigation bar.

You can take advantage of internal links by specifically linking related topics with one another.

📁 Start page
└ 📁 Topic page SEO
└ 📁 On-Page
└ 📁 Topic page web design
└ 📁 Company website

I link all of my topic pages (for example, create a website ) with the relevant articles. And these articles in turn with each other. Because they all deal with related topics.

In this way you not only help your readers to find further content, but also show Google that this content all belongs together .

With this information, the crawler can crawl your website much more efficiently.

And best of all : if one of the pages ranks particularly well, then all linked pages benefit too.

This is how you should build your website to get the most out of internal links.
The easiest way to inform google about your internal links is by submitting an XML sitemap in the Google Search Console.

internal links

16. Make sure all links work

Make sure all links work: Nobody likes to click on broken links. So make sure all the links work.
Nobody likes to click on broken links. So make sure all the links work.
I wrote a lot about internal and external linking in the previous two sections of our SEO checklist.

These links will only help you if all links really work.

Neither your readers nor the search engine like clicking a link and landing on a 404 page .

With broken links, you’re not only wasting link juice , but also annoying your readers.

So please make sure that all of your links really work.

17. A website in responsive design

A website with responsive design: A majority of readers use a smartphone: Your website should not only look good on the computer in the office.
A majority of readers use a smartphone: Your page should not only look good on the computer in the office.
A website in responsive web design ensures that your content always looks good on all devices.

Since 2015, Google has been penalizing websites that are not created in a responsive design.

This means that if your website is not mobile friendly , then your competitors with mobile optimized websites will always be found better than you. So you urgently need a mobile version of your website.

In 2018, Google introduced what is known as mobile-first indexing . This means that the mobile website lands first in the Google index.

Without a mobile website, your website will be indexed much later.

If you’re not sure whether your website is mobile optimized, you can use Google’s mobile optimization test .

That is the optimal result for mobile friendliness

Responsive design

18. Fast loading times

Fast loading times: History waits for no man – and nobody waits for websites that load for a long time.
History waits for no man – and nobody waits for websites that load for a long time.
Loading times have been a decisive ranking factor for Google since 2010.

The idea behind this is that websites should above all be user-friendly: If you wait up to 10 seconds for a website to load, it is not particularly user-friendly.

An important aspect here is that users with smartphones should not unnecessarily load many megabytes of images, scripts, etc. over their data volume.

Slow websites not only cost you valuable rankings, but also and above all users.

Therefore, you should make sure that your website loads quickly as soon as possible.

You can do an initial check with PageSpeed Insights from Google .

If the result is less than 75 points, you urgently need to do something. Fortunately, the tool shows you the most important adjustments that you (or your developer) can turn.

You can usually fix the biggest problems in a few hours.

19. HTTPS encryption

HTTPS encryption: HTTPS encryption is not only a ranking signal for Google but has also been practically mandatory since the introduction of the GDPR.
HTTPS encryption is not only a ranking signal for Google but has also been practically mandatory since the introduction of the GDPR.
Google has preferred websites with HTTPS encryption since 2014. This ranking signal only gained in importance over the next six years.

In Europe in particular, HTTPS encryption has actually become mandatory with the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (DSGVG).

For example, you can only use a contact form if the data transmission from the user to the recipient is secured – with HTTPS.

If your website does not yet have HTTPS encryption, you should upgrade it as soon as possible .

20. Length of stay

Length of stay: How much time do your readers spend on your article?
How much time do your readers spend on your article?
The length of stay describes the time that your readers spend with the content of your website after they have found you on Google.

Three things can happen to a new visitor to your website that have a direct effect on the length of stay:

  • The visitor realizes this is not for me and leaves the page immediately
  • He reads through your content for a few minutes and thinks this is helpful –
  • He finds your content so perfect that he spends a lot of time directly on your article.

This behavior gives Google another indication of the quality of your content.

If a large number of site visitors immediately jump back to the search mask, then this is an indication of poor quality.

However, if your visitors stay a little on your site, then the content is at least average.

And if visitors stay a long time to read your text carefully, then it must be excellent content.

You can find out how long your website is staying with Google Analytics . You can find the data under Target group -> Overview

You can improve the length of time visitors stay in a number of ways:

  • Write more helpful texts
  • Offer unique added value
  • Help your readers solve a problem

If you stick to our catalog of measures, then you no longer have a problem with too short a stay.

That is the length of stay on our homepage. One minute is more than enough for an overview.

21. Bounce Rate

Bounce rate: Are your readers interacting with your text or are they gone straight away? Then you have to do something.
Do your readers interact with your text or are they gone straight away? Then you have to do something.
The bounce rate means the visitors who come to your website, do nothing (not even scroll) and immediately disappear again.

According to Google, the bounce rate does not affect the rankings of your website.

However, Larry Kim found an interesting connection between bounce rate and organic rankings. He wrote a detailed article about it at Moz.

You can protect yourself against a high bounce rate (well over 50%), for example, by:

  • Good internal links
  • Excellent content
  • And well-written texts

Just like the length of stay, you can view the data on the bounce rate on Google Analytics.

This is the bounce rate on our homepage. Almost 70% of all visitors seek further information.

bounce rate

22. Length of the body text

Body Text Length: If you are writing about a topic, you should cover it comprehensively. A length of around 1,500 words is also considered appropriate in 2021.
If you are writing on a topic, you should cover it comprehensively. A length of around 1,500 words is also considered appropriate in 2021.

Longer content always achieves better rankings on average than short content.

The average length of a result on page one on Google is around 1,900 words.

You will find that hardly any article on this page is shorter than at least 1,000 words. Many are much longer.

What Google calls long always differs from industry to industry. But always try to treat a topic as comprehensively as possible. For example in the form of a checklist.

As a rule of thumb, you can remember: You can safely save texts under 300 words in length. You only have a chance to play at the top of Google if you have 1,000 words or more per article.

23. Depth of content

Depth of content: Your article should leave no questions unanswered: Explain the concept and technical terms for readers who are not yet professionals.
Your article should leave no questions unanswered: Explain the concept and technical terms for readers who are not yet professionals.
The depth of content of your texts has only superficially something to do with the number of words.

You can certainly write 1,500 words of superficiality. But who has added value from it? Nobody.

Therefore, you should not only write long, but above all comprehensively informative texts.

Or in short: offer enough information that your readers get all questions answered.

For example, you can write instructions that give your readers a rough overview. With microdata, this then also appears in the Google search results:

Or you can explain technical terms that your readers may not know. If you add Schema.org microdata to your FAQ, it will even show up on the Google search page:

24. Up-to-date content

Topicality of the content: There is nothing less interesting than yesterday’s news: Always offer your readers the latest content.
There is nothing less interesting than yesterday’s news: Always offer your readers the latest content.
New content on your website can improve your rankings. If you take advantage of internal links, even your older articles benefit from it.

Google now shows the publication date of an article in the search results.

Experience shows that readers tend to click on new articles rather than old ones. A current date next to your text has a positive effect on your click rate on Google.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that older content has lost some of its truthfulness.

Above you can see our article from January 13, 2019. The topics of good content, responsive design and loading times are still brand new.

Up-to-date content

25. Correct spelling and grammar

Correct spelling and grammar: Correct spelling and grammar are also a sign of quality on the Internet.
Correct spelling and grammar are also a sign of quality on the Internet.
Spelling and grammar are not trivial offenses:

Individual typos do not destroy your chances of getting a good ranking on Google; But they leave a bad impression on your readers.

In a long, informative post, however, you want to shine through specialist knowledge.

So please make sure that your sentences are grammatically correct and easy to understand.

Google will mercilessly devalue illegible mishmash. And that affects your whole website.

(PS If you found a typo in this list, please write to us. )

Bonus: Use of videos:

If you have taken all 25 tips to heart, you should think about how you can enrich your text with audio and video content.

If you have taken all 25 tips to heart, you should think about how you can enrich your text with audio and video content.
In our bonus round I will explain to you how multimedia content can help to increase the quality of your articles even further.

The targeted use of thematically appropriate images, video and audio files not only makes your content more understandable, but also helps you to generate backlinks or to get a lot of shares on social media.

Multimedia content ensures:

  • Longer residence time
  • Lower bounce rate
  • More reach on social media
  • More backlinks

because your content is perceived as being of higher quality.

For example, you can offer your readers infographics, PDFs with the most important information or a video summary.
